چکیده

Nowadays, databases serve two main workloads: Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytic Processing (OLAP). For decades, relational databases dominated both areas. With the hype on NoSQL databases, the picture has changed. Initially designed as inter-process hash tables handling OLTP requested, some key-value store vendors have started to tackle the area of OLAP as well. Therefore, in this performance study, we compare the relational databases PostgreSQL, MonetDB, and HyPer with the key-value stores Redis and Aerospike in their write, read, and analytical capabilities. Based on the results, we investigate the reasons of the database’s respective advantages and disadvantages.

OBDA Beyond Relational DBs: A Study for MongoDB

The database landscape has been significantly diversified during the last decade, resulting in the emergence of a variety of non-relational (also called NoSQL) databases, e.g., XML and JSON-document databases, key-value stores, and graph databases. To facilitate access to such databases and to enable data integration of non-relational data sources, we generalize the well-known ontologybased dat...

Quantitative Analysis of Consistency in NoSQL Key-Value Stores

The promise of high scalability and availability has prompted many companies to replace traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) with NoSQL key-value stores. This comes at the cost of relaxed consistency guarantees: key-value stores only guarantee eventual consistency in principle. In practice, however, many key-value stores seem to offer stronger consistency. Quantifying how ...

Determining SLO Violations at Compile Time

Fearing the fate of Friendster, which fell out of vogue due to its unacceptable latency, providers of largescale, interactive web services obsess about performance. Their developers thus labor to write queries whose latency will meet the company’s service quality goal, or service level objective (SLO). Since it is still very difficult to reason about latency for traditional relational database ...

OBDA Over Non-Relational Databases

Ontology-Mediated Queries for NOSQL Databases

Ontology-Based Data Access has been studied so far for relational structures and deployed on top of relational databases. This paradigm enables a uniform access to heterogeneous data sources, also coping with incomplete information. Whether OBDA is suitable also for non-relational structures, like those shared by increasingly popular NOSQL languages, is still an open question. In this paper, we...
